July 2026 has been a genuinely significant month for AI robotics. Multiple companies have reported milestones in real-world deployments, new humanoid platforms have entered commercial availability, and the economics of robotic automation are starting to look compelling for a much wider range of industries. Here's what happened and why it matters.
Figure AI: 1,000 Robots in BMW Facilities
Figure AI reached a significant milestone this month, announcing that it has 1,000 Figure 02 humanoid robots operating across BMW's manufacturing facilities in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Germany. The robots handle body shop tasks — picking parts, loading fixtures, and performing visual quality checks — working alongside human line workers on standard automotive shifts.
BMW's reported productivity numbers are striking: a 12% reduction in line worker injuries on the tasks the robots handle (removing ergonomically difficult repetitive lifts from human workers), and a 7% throughput increase on the specific line segments that are fully roboticized.
Figure AI has begun accepting deposits for enterprise customers outside automotive, with expected delivery timelines of Q2-Q3 2027. The Figure 02 costs approximately $150,000-$180,000 per unit depending on configuration, plus ongoing software and support fees.
Boston Dynamics Atlas: Software Update and New Customers
Boston Dynamics pushed a significant software update to its Atlas platform in July, with a focus on improved bipedal stability on uneven terrain and better manipulation of non-standard objects. Atlas can now reliably pick up and stack boxes of significantly varying sizes without needing prior specification of box dimensions — an improvement that matters for logistics environments where packaging is inconsistent.

Agility Robotics: Digit v3 Updates
Agility Robotics' Digit humanoid, which handles tote movement in Amazon fulfillment centers, received its third major hardware revision this year. Digit v3 includes:

AI Enabling Robots: What's Driving the Acceleration
