AI search makes mistakes. The synthesis process can:

Traditional search doesn't synthesize, so it doesn't make these synthesis errors—but it doesn't catch you if you misread a source either.

For factual queries on well-established topics, AI search is usually accurate. For nuanced, contested, or recent topics, verification matters. Check the citations that AI search tools provide; they're there for a reason.

Perplexity in particular shows sources prominently and makes verification relatively easy. That transparency is a feature worth caring about when comparing AI search tools.

The Experience Difference

Part of why people prefer AI search for many queries isn't accuracy—it's speed and cognitive load. Reading five pages to extract one answer takes time and attention. Getting a synthesized answer in ten seconds, with citations you can check if you want to, is a different experience.

For casual information needs, the efficiency matters. For research that requires understanding nuance, reading primary sources, and building your own judgment, the shortcut is a liability.

Privacy Considerations

Both approaches involve sending your queries to third parties. AI search tools powered by general AI models may use query data for training unless you opt out. Traditional search has its own well-documented data collection practices.

If query privacy matters for your use case—researching sensitive medical conditions, business-sensitive competitive intelligence, personal financial situations—be aware that both traditional and AI search involve your queries leaving your device.

Local AI tools and private search engines offer alternatives, though with functionality tradeoffs.
